Istanbul is undoubtably one of the world's most unique cities. Just look at a map and you'll see why – it straddles both Europe and Asia, the Bosphorus strait running down the middle, making it the world's only city to sit across two continents. But it is not just its location that makes Istanbul so remarkable. It has a rich history, with more historical attractions than you can shake a guidebook at, from magnificent Ottoman mosques and palaces, to underground Byzantine cisterns and steamy bathhouses (the European side of Istanbul is where most attractions are located, while the Asian side is mostly residential). Despite its historical roots, the city has one foot firmly in the 21st century, with exciting state-of-the-art hotels and restaurants in abundance, alongside contemporary boutiques and art galleries. What's not to love?
