Travel Guide to Bali
When in Bali, don’t forget to…
Catch the nightly Kecak fire and trance dance. Head to the Pura Luhur Uluwatu temple to watch Kecak, a reenactment of a battle from the Hindu epic, the Ramayana, usually performed by around 100 or so bare-chested men. It is sometimes called the Ramayana Monkey Chant. The highlight of this feast for the senses is the accompanying chanting, which can be trance-inducing to say the least.
Have dinner on the beach. Jimbaran Bay comes alive each evening when dozens of restaurants set up candlelit tables right on the beach. Fresh seafood is the speciality here, with most menus boasting delicacies such as crab, lobster, prawns, squid and a wide variety of fish. Stay for the nightly traditional dance performances put on by most of the restaurants.
Art trawl in Ubud. The art galleries here can be a real treasure trove and those who take the time are bound to find some enthralling pieces. Begin your journey by learning about Balinese art at the Neka Art Museum, which dates back to 1982 and houses over 300 artworks. For a more modern experience, head to Sika Gallery or Komaneka Fine Art Gallery (gallery.komaneka.com), devoted to showcasing contemporary Indonesian art.
Visit Tanah Lot. One of the most popular tourist attractions in Bali, the 15th-century temple is a sight to behold. Built on a crumbling offshore rock, the impressive temple is one of seven peppered around Bali’s coastline. The setting sun really brings the structure to life so be sure to bring your camera.
Enjoy a cocktail with a view. Boasting enviable 360-degree views, Ayana Resort’s Rock Bar is one of the island’s best perches to see the sun dip below the horizon. It’s situated on a rocky outcrop right above the Indian Ocean in Jimbaran Bay. This stylish Bali institution boasts a minimalist decor – including an illuminated glass bar – spread over multi-levelled timber decks.
