Travel Guide to Los Angeles
When in Los Angeles, don’t forget to...
Take the tram uphill to the Getty Center. It’s one of the best-loved art museums in the western US thanks to its extensive collections and sweeping views across the LA basin. The Richard Meier-designed pavilions gleam with white marble – the better to show off works by Van Gogh to David Hockney, baroque French furniture, or contemporary Japanese photography. Be sure to take a stroll through artist Robert Irwin’s ever-changing garden.
Thrill your ears and eyes at the Walt Disney Concert Hall. This decade-old masterpiece by Pritzker Architecture Prize winner Frank Gehry seems to float like an unfurling stainless steel flag. It’s best experienced during a concert of the resident Los Angeles Philharmonic (under the baton of the dynamic Gustavo Dudamel) or on a self-guided architectural tour. But for a quick visit, a hidden walkway takes you around the exterior for one-of-a-kind views.
Go glam in Hollywood. Start at the TCL Chinese Theatre where stars from John Wayne and Marilyn Monroe to Daniel Radcliffe and R2D2 have left hand- and footprints in concrete. It’s next door to the Dolby Theatre, where the annual Academy Awards ceremony is held. Around the corner at the Hollywood Museum, every last inch is crammed with memorabilia from movie history.
Experience California beach life in Santa Monica and Venice Beach. They’re twin communities on LA’s Westside. Start at the Santa Monica Pier, where a small amusement park boasts a big, solar-powered Ferris wheel. Follow the broad, sandy strand south through the original Muscle Beach and into Venice, with its street performers and merchants peddling crafts and casual clothing. End the day amid the chic boutiques and bars of Venice’s Abbot Kinney Boulevard, consistently ranked one of America’s hippest streets.
Shop till you drop in Beverly Hills and West Hollywood. Beverly Hills’ world famous Rodeo Drive boasts an A to Z (Armani to Zegna) of international designer boutiques with cutting edge fashion. Head further east to Melrose Avenue for selections from Alexander McQueen, Jonathan Adler and Kelly Wearstler.
