These two weeks of events celebrate Manchester’s rich Irish heritage at a huge number of venues. The proceedings wind up with a St Patrick’s day parade that claims to be the UK’s largest. You’ll be assured of a lot of fun (or “craic”, as the Irish say). The festival started in 1996.

The UK’s Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) has met with serious success of late – traditional beer is a big deal on British shores these days. Ten different local breweries, from traditional family companies to newer micro-breweries, will be represented, plus countless foreign beers. There’s also cider for those who fancy something fruitier.
