Travel Guide to Osaka

When in Osaka, don’t forget to…

Visit Osaka Castle – a stunning white and gold structure, first built in the 16th century. It’s the city’s most famous landmark. Stroll through the castle grounds and admire the city’s largest plum garden and acres of cherry trees. Between February to April, join locals as they flock by the thousands to witness the trees explode into a spectacular bloom.

Hit the vibrant entertainment district of Dotonbori. It’s located right near the hub of Namba. With huge neon billboards and giant figurines of crabs, dragons and puffer fish decorating restaurants, the area is best explored at night. For dinner, head down to the canal where food stalls serve the best of local cuisine like takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (pan-fried cabbage pancake). For a touch of old world charm, stroll down the stone-paved, lantern-lit alleyway of Hozenji Yokocho located right next to Dotonbori Street.

Learn about Osaka-born Momofuku Ando – the scientist who invented instant noodles in 1958. Explore the fascinating history of this ubiquitous convenience food at The Momofuku Ando Instant Ramen Museum in Ikeda where you can tailor-make your own cup of noodles to bring home.

Go underwater at the world-famous Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan, home to acrobatic dolphins, otherworldly jellyfish and giant spider crabs. The aquarium’s centrepiece is a nine metre-deep central tank that displays a female whale shark named Yu-chan. A stone’s throw away is the Tempozan Giant Ferris Wheel from where you can take in a panoramic view of the city from 112m in the air.

Climb even higher at Abeno Harukas – the tallest building in Japan. The 60-storey building has an observation deck on its top floor that towers 300m above ground. It’s scheduled to open on March 7, 2014.
