Where to stay in Male - Traders Hotel by Shangri-La, Male, Maldives

Traders Hotel by Shangri-La, Male, Maldives

If you don’t have time to visit this five-star chain’s flagship Maldivian resort – that’s located on Villingili Island on the southern most tip of Addu Atoll, a 70-minute flight south of the capital – then its 117-room alternative is a great compromise. All the luxury touches are still in place: there’s an infinity pool on the roof, it’s accessible by flash speedboat transfer and there are three restaurants to choose from.

Insider Tip: Don’t miss the bustling fish market – a one-minute walk away. It’ll put you in the mood for the sumptuous seafood dishes on offer at the rooftop Azur Restaurant.

Where to stay in Male - Sala Boutique Hotel

Sala Boutique Hotel

Bringing a little bit of Thailand to the Maldives, this family-run hotel is a pint-sized retreat for those hankering for a more personal touch. Four-poster beds, wooden parquet floors, solar-powered showers, and only six rooms add up to a stylish and swanky pad that’s served with a beaming Thai smile.

Insider Tip: Treat yourself after a long-haul flight with a massage. You are on holiday after all.

Where to stay in Male - The Somerset Hotel

The Somerset Hotel

If it’s good enough for the locals, then it’s good enough for practically anybody. The Somerset is perfect for seaplane island-hoppers, city-breakers and those like us who can’t bear to leave for the airport just yet. There are only 30 rooms so it feels more intimate than most of its resort rivals, yet is a quick walk to most tourist sights, including Jumhooree Maidhaan (also known as Republic Square) and the National Museum.

Insider Tip: If you want to see Male with the wind in your hair, take one of the complimentary bicycles for a spin.

Where to stay in Male - Kurumba Maldives Resort

Kurumba Maldives Resort

For those who simply want to fly and flop, the Kurumba Maldives Resort couldn’t be better located. It’s a 10-minute speedboat ride from the capital, but feels like it exists in an atoll of its own. As soon as you check in, you’re in touching distance of the white sand beaches and languorous pool days that you’ve dreamt about for months.

Insider Tip: It’s the biggest and oldest resort near Male, but that doesn’t mean it’s a slouch when it comes to honeymoon romance. For those ubiquitous crystal-clear waters and powder-white sands, take a kayak for a spin around the resort to see what all the fuss is about.

Where to stay in Male - Anantara Naladhu

Anantara Naladhu

Should you want to play Robinson Crusoe on more than one island – and with countless to explore, who could blame you? – take the 30-minute boat trip to Anantara Naladhu in the South Male Atoll. On a crisp clear azure lagoon sheltered by two neighbouring islands, it defines the luxury Maldives experience.

Insider Tip: While the butler service, personal swimming pool and hot tub are enough to tempt you to never leave your beach villa, it’s worth visiting The Living Room restaurant for its eye-popping, glass-walled beach wine cellar. Now that’s something they don’t have in Paris or New York.
