What is a PDA?
A PDA (Personal Digital Assistant) or handheld computer is a productivity and communications tool that is lightweight and compact. Typically, it can be held in one hand, leaving the other to input data with a pen-type stylus or a reduced-size keyboard. Basic applications that most PDAs contain include an Electronic Calendar, Address Book, Notepad, and Calculator.

What are the PDAs that can connect to the Internet?
Some models that can support a WAP browser include: Ericsson MC218
Palm IIIx (using Operating System version 3.3)
Palm V (using Operating System version 3.3)
Palm Vx
Compaq iPAQ
Sony Clie 710

To find out more about the various models of Internet-enabled PDAs, please contact your PDA manufacturer. In order for the above mentioned PDAs to connect to the Internet, they must be equipped with either one of the following:
  • Mobile phone with built-in infrared ports
  • Mobile phone with detachable infrared modems

To check if your mobile phone is equipped to connect to the Internet, please contact your service provider.

Can I receive graphics on my PDA? P>Yes, you can receive simple graphics such as the Singapore Airlines logo on your PDA. However, the size and clarity of the graphic is dependent on the model of your PDA.
I have a PDA and a mobile phone with a built-in infrared port. How can I access SIA Mobile Services on WAP?

Some of the possible reasons include:

  2. You may not have 'synced' with your computer since you downloaded the SIA PQA software and thus it has yet to install on your PDA.
  3. Your SIA PQA channel was not setup correctly. Download the SIA PQA again from here and then 'sync' your PDA.

WAP & GPRS
What is WAP?
WAP (Wireless Application Protocol) is a leading global open standard for wireless services over phone networks. It allows you to access Internet content via wireless devices such as your mobile phone or PDA. You can then access information even while on the go.

What are GPRS and 3G?
General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) is a packet-data technology that allows mobile users to connect to the Internet at up to 115kbps. GPRS is a vital step in the evolution to third-generation (3G) mobile services. With 3G mobile networks, broadband multimedia communication will soon be realised.

Is WAP secure?
WAP's security is defined in its protocol level called WTLS (Wireless Transport Layer Security.) However, the encryption provided will only cover transmissions between the WAP phone and the WAP gateway. Singapore Airlines is closely monitoring developments in the WAP arena in order to provide full-fledged, end-to-end security for wireless transactional services in the near future.

How can I tell if my mobile phone is WAP-enabled?
A WAP-enabled mobile phone is equipped with a micro-browser that allows users to access information and carry out transactions on the Internet. Key in the address www.singaporeair.com/mobile into your WAP phone to access the service. You might want to bookmark this address for future use. You can consult your phone's user manual on how to bookmark addresses on the phone's micro-browser.
