The Environment

Singapore Airlines takes a long-term view of the development of its air transportation and related businesses. This includes broader responsibilities to the worldwide communities the Airline serve, and recognition that developing a sustainable aviation industry is a key challenge for airlines, as well as aircraft and engine manufacturers. We exercise strict management of aircraft weight, and run maintenance programmes for both airframes and engines to enhance operational efficiency, thereby reducing fuel consumption.

As part of our commitment to the continual improvement of environmental performance, we have taken a number of appropriate measures to address key areas of environmental concern linked to operations, both on the ground and in the air. These include : Information on our key environmental activities and performance is published in the Singapore Airlines Environmental Report 2009-10. The Report includes data on aircraft emissions, electricity and water consumption, and lists various green activities such as waste minimization and efficient use of resources.

Embracing New Technology

Singapore Airlines embraces new technology from aircraft and engine manufacturers. We often order new aircraft types before they’re built, because we believe in backing manufacturers to develop innovative technology. As such, the Airline operates one of the youngest and most fuel-efficient fleets in the skies. We also take pride in being the first to operate the Airbus A380, the cleanest and greenest aircraft in operation today. Its fuel burn per seat mile and carbon dioxide emissions per customer are the lowest of any aircraft. The A380 is also quieter, both inside and outside the cabin.

Flight Operation Procedures that Reduces Fuel Burn

Following a series of successful trial flights, Singapore Airlines has put into practice since November 2009 a new airline procedure for A380 operations at London’s Heathrow Airport. The A380s operated by Singapore Airlines departing Heathrow now use less power when taking off, saving fuel and emitting less carbon dioxide and NOx, while remaining within the airport’s strict noise limits. This new procedure saves an additional 300kg of fuel per flight, without compromising safety. The amount saved equates to almost 1 metric tonne of carbon dioxide emissions on a flight from London to Singapore.

Participation in the Asia and Pacific Initiative to Reduce Emissions (ASPIRE) Programme

In February 2010, Singapore Airlines partnered aviation authorities in Singapore, the US and Japan to carry out the first multi-sector demonstration green flight under the Asia and Pacific Initiative to Reduce Emissions (ASPIRE) programme. SQ 11, which operated from Los Angeles to Singapore via Tokyo, employed a series of efficiency measures for all phases of the flight, and operated under optimum air traffic conditions with the help of air traffic controllers. As a result, it was able to use around 6 per cent less fuel than normally required for a similar flight.

Green Initiatives on the Ground

On the ground, the Airline continues its part for the environment by implementing electronic ticketing across its network –- an initiative that not only reduces costs but saves trees as well – and embraces energy conservation and green building designs at the workplace to reduce energy usage.

Commitment to Achieving Carbon-Neutral Growth

Singapore Airlines will continue to be at the forefront of aviation’s drive towards carbon-neutral growth with the aim of a sustainable future for the airline industry. To this end, the Airline supports the International Air Transport Association’s commitment for the industry to achieve carbon-neutral growth through a set of three sequential goals:

  • 1.5% average annual improvement in fuel efficiency from 2009 to 2020;
  • Carbon-neutral growth from 2020; and
  • 50% absolute reduction in carbon emissions by 2050.
