KrisFlyer Redemption Awards from 29 September 2008

1. What are the changes to the KrisFlyer programme?
The redemption features of the KrisFlyer programme have been enhanced in four ways:
  • When you redeem your miles for a one-way award ticket on Singapore Airlines or SilkAir flights, you require only 50% of the usual number of miles, instead of the previous 70%.
  • A new award type, the Full award, has been introduced for redemption on Singapore Airlines flights. With the Full award, you now have access to more redemption seats and enjoy greater flexibility to mix and match award types when planning your itinerary.
  • The unrestricted award has been renamed Standard award.
  • There is no change to the round-trip Saver award.
  • When you make an Online Redemption Booking, simply indicate your preferred destination and class of travel and you can easily select from an array of available award types.

2. When did the changes take place?
The changes took effect from 29 September 2008 at 0001hr (Singapore Time).

1. How many award types are available from 29 September 2008?
From 29 September 2008, three award types are available:
  • Full award - a new award type that provides you with access to more redemption seats so you can enjoy flexibility to mix and match award types when planning your itinerary.
  • Standard award - renamed from the previous Unrestricted award. It provides a greater selection of seats on all flights, extended ticket validity and two free stopovers per round-trip, giving you extra flexibility.
  • Saver award - offered in Economy, Business and First Class in most aircraft types, and requires fewer KrisFlyer miles.

All three award types are available for redemption on Singapore Airlines flights only. For redemption on SilkAir flights, only the Saver award is available.
For redemption on other airline partners such as Star Alliance carriers, please refer to their respective award charts or use the Redemption Calculator.

2. What are the benefits of new Full award?
The Full award provides you with access to more redemption seats so you can enjoy greater flexibility to mix and match award types to best suit your travel plans.

3. Is there any change to the Saver and the Unrestricted (now renamed Standard) awards?
The Unrestricted award has been renamed Standard award. There is no change to the Saver award.

1. Is there any change to the number of KrisFlyer miles required for the Saver award?
No, there is no change to the number of miles required for the round-trip Saver award.

2. Is there any change to the number of KrisFlyer miles required for the Standard award (compared to the previous Unrestricted award)?
No, there is no change to the number of miles required for the round-trip Standard award.

3. Is there any change to the number of KrisFlyer miles required for a one-way award ticket?
Yes, a one-way award ticket on Singapore Airlines and SilkAir flights will only require 50% of the usual number of miles for a round-trip award ticket, instead of the previous 70%.

4. What is the redemption level for the Full award?
The redemption level of the Full award is determined by the origin and destination that you are travelling to. For more details, please refer to the relevant award charts.

6. With the introduction of the Full award, will there be fewer seats available for the Saver award and Standard award?
No, seats for the Full award are available in addition to the seats set aside for the Saver award and Standard award.

7. If I have ticketed my award flight before 29 September 2008, but will be travelling after 29 September 2008, can I take advantage of the change in redemption levels?
No, the new redemption levels are only applicable for redemption bookings that are ticketed from 29 September 2008 onwards.

1. How will the change in the number of KrisFlyer miles required for a one-way award ticket benefit me?
Since a one-way award ticket will only require 50% of the usual number of miles for a round-trip award ticket, you can redeem:
i) An open jaw via online redemption booking using 2 different tickets without any increase in number of miles, or
ii) Two one-way award tickets and select the best seat option for your itinerary by mixing different award types and classes of travel.

For instance, if you wish to redeem your miles for a return trip between Singapore and London, you can redeem for:

  • a Business Saver award from Singapore to London; and
  • an Economy Full award from London to Singapore.

2. How will I be able to calculate the number of KrisFlyer miles required for one-way award tickets of different award types and in different classes of travel?
Simply ask the following questions:
  • Where will you be travelling from?
  • Where will you be travelling to?
  • What is your preferred award type?
  • Will you be redeeming your miles for a round-trip or one-way award ticket?

For instance, if you wish to redeem your miles for a return trip between Singapore and London in different classes of travel, your answers will be:

  • I will be travelling from Singapore, which is in Zone 1.
  • I will be travelling to London (United Kingdom), which is in Zone 12.
  • I will be selecting a one-way Business Saver award from Singapore to London, and a one-way Economy Full award from London to Singapore.
  • I will be redeeming my miles for two one-way award tickets.

Using the Redemption Calculator or the award charts to determine the number of miles required:
Zone 1 to Zone 12 (Business Saver) = 60,000 KrisFlyer miles
Zone 12 to Zone 1 (Economy Full) = 105,000 KrisFlyer miles

So:
The total number of miles you will require for an one-way Business Saver award from Singapore to London, and an one-way Economy Full award from London to Singapore = 60,000 + 105,000 = 165,000 KrisFlyer miles.

1. How has the Online Redemption Booking (ORB) feature been enhanced?
Previously, you were required to select the preferred class of travel and award type at the beginning of the ORB flow, before you were informed of the availability of your selection.
From 29 September 2008, you only need to select your preferred class of travel and you will be informed of all the available award types that match your selected origin-destination and travel class.

2. Can I redeem my KrisFlyer miles for open-jaw round-trip award tickets online?
An open-jaw round-trip itinerary is to fly from a point of origin to a destination, and return to the point of origin from another destination – for instance, if you travel from Singapore to San Francisco, and return from Los Angeles to Singapore.
At the moment, you are unable to redeem your miles for open-jaw round-trip award tickets online with the same redemption mileage. However, you can use your miles to redeem for open-jaw via two one-way award tickets online without any difference in the number of miles required – for instance, a one-way award ticket from Singapore to San Francisco, and a one-way award ticket from Los Angeles to Singapore.

1. How do I read the new award chart?
The new award chart is based on the number of KrisFlyer miles required for one-way award tickets, instead of round-trip award tickets.
Simply ask the following questions:
  • Where will you be travelling from?
  • Where will you be travelling to?
  • What is your preferred award type?
  • Will you be redeeming your miles for a round-trip or one-way award ticket?

For instance, if you wish to redeem your miles for a return trip between Sydney and London in different classes of travel, your answers will be:

  • I will be travelling from Singapore, which is in Zone 1.
  • I will be travelling to London (United Kingdom), which is in Zone 12.
  • I will be selecting an Economy Saver award.
  • I will be redeeming my miles for a round-trip award ticket.

As you wish to redeem your miles for a round-trip award ticket, just double the number of miles stated in the award chart.

The award chart states:
Zone 1 (Singapore) to Zone 12 (United Kingdom) on Economy Saver = 35,000 KrisFlyer miles

So:
The total number of miles you will require for a round-trip Economy Saver award from Singapore to London (United Kingdom) = 35,000 x 2 = 70,000 KrisFlyer miles

1. What is the award ticket validity period of the Full award?
The validity period of the Full award ticket is 12 months.

2. Will I be entitled to any complimentary stopover with the Full award?
One-way Full award will be entitled to one complimentary stopover while round-trip Full award will be entitled to two complimentary stopovers.

3. Will I be able to redeem seats on all aircraft types with new Full award?
Yes, the new Full award is available for redemption on all aircraft types. However, no redemption is available for the Singapore Airlines Suites on A380.
In addition, the following chart shows the types of award available for redemption for each of the aircraft type.
