From 1 April 2008, customers will be able to work out, even before they arrive at the airport, the extra costs that would be incurred if they wish to travel with more baggage than their checked allowance.  Currently, the exact amount are typically  determined only at the check-in counters.

Currently, customers are charged 1.5 percent of the highest one-way Published Economy fare for each excess kg.  With the new excess baggage policy, excess baggage charges will be levied across a zonal system, based on the originating region and the disembarking region:

The new system applies to all travel itineraries that do not involve the Americas region, including interline travel, with Singapore Airlines or SilkAir as the first flight segment.

Exceptions to this new policy are itineraries between Dubai and Moscow, and Dubai and Istanbul for which excess baggage charges will be levied at S$30 per kilogram.

For itineraries involving the Americas region, the allowed weight for each bag will be reduced from 32kg (70lb) to 23kg (50lb). Customers will still continue to enjoy a two-piece free allowance. Excess baggage will be continued to be levied on a per-piece basis.

PPS Club members will continue to enjoy a 100% increase in baggage allowance on Singapore Airlines and SilkAir. For itineraries involving the Americas region, members can check in 4 pieces of baggage, each with an allowed weight of 23 kg (50lb).

Elite Gold members will continue to enjoy 20 kg of extra baggage allowance to all destinations except those in the Americas region. For itineraries on Singapore Airlines involving the Americas region, Elite Gold members can check in one additional piece of  baggage, with an allowed weight of 23kg (50lb) per piece.
