The Fascination of Malaysian Borneo

Land of the Hornbills & Land Below the Wind

Sabah & Sarawak
In 2007, Malaysia is celebrating 50 years of Nationhood. On this occasion, the State offers a wide range of activities. While most of the activities are concentrated in Western Malaysia, the less traveled East stands for unspoiled nature, enigmatic natives and the grandiose Orang Utan. Best travel time to Borneo is between March and November, the beginning of the wet season.

Sabah - Kota Kinabalu
Fly into Kota Kinabalu and climb easy accessible Mount Kinabalu, one of the highest peaks of South East Asia (4'095 m). Then proceed to Sandakan, the former capital of British North Borneo, and experience the stunning Kinabatangan River being the habitat to wild elephants, orang utans, crocodiles and much more fascinating fauna and flora.

The Orang Utan shares more than 96% of our genes and is a fascinating ape to observe. Unfortunately it is also one of the most endangered species. The Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary tries to fight this threat and offers insights into their rehabilitation centre near Sandakan. Learn more by clicking here

Sarawak - Kuching
When arriving in Kuching, you will be surprised to find one of the most pleasant cities of South East Asia. Take the effort of traveling deep into the jungle close to the Indonesian border and meeting up with the Iban people, who used to headhunt until the early twenties of the last century. You will be warmly welcomed and can stay with them in their charming longhouses.

Find out more about the mythical customs of headhunting later prohibited by British colonialists. Click here
