Fly to Amsterdam

Delightfully quaint
Amsterdam, the capital and largest city of Holland (also called the Netherlands) is built on an intricate network of canals. Originally founded in the 12th Century as a small fishing village, Amsterdam retains a charm comparable to Venice. It is easy to get lost in the maze of canals, bridges and paths, but the sights are well worth it.

Highlights
Anne Frank House, Van Gogh Museum, Rijksmuseum, Rembrandthuis, Stedelijk Museum, Heineken experience, canal cruises, diamond factories

When to visit - climate
Summer is the most popular time of year for visitors to Amsterdam. April and May are also good months, when the bulb flowers are blooming.

Transport
Trains leave from the airport to downtown Amsterdam regularly. From the Central Station, trams depart to all areas of the city. A 'strippenkaart' is an economical suggestion for those who are using public transport often. However, as Amsterdam is a compact city, it can be uncovered on foot, or on bicycle, like the locals.

Shopping
De Bijenkorf is Amsterdam's major department store. It is located at Dam Square and is a 5-minute walk from the Central Station. Significant pedestrian shopping streets are Nieuwendijk and Kalverstraat, close to Dam Square. P.C. Hoofstraat in the Museum Quarter houses all of the upmarket designer shops. For lovers of arts and antiques, Spiegel Quarter is recommended.

Cuisine
Breakfast commonly consists of fresh bread with butter, jam, ham, cheese or chocolate sprinkles. Lunch introduces cold meats into the mix, and an accompanying glass of milk is not unusual.
Dutch pastries, french fries and bitterballen (deep-fried meatballs with a crispy outside) are popular snacks, and dinner is back to basics with selections of vegetables and meats.

The restaurant scene is multicultural, and it is easy to find a multitude of cuisines from around the world. The Jordaan area (south-west of the Central Station) has many lovely restaurants and is off the main tourist stretch.

Nightlife
The Leidseplein and Rembrandtplein areas are the main nightlife regions. In Leidseplein, Jimmy Woo is the most exclusive club. At Rembrandtplein, Escape is the city's biggest disco.
