Fly to Barcelona

Southern Spanish appeal
This Mediterranean city began as a small port town but quickly grew with the arrival of the Franks in the late 9th Century. Barcelona has a different identity to the rest of Spain, and this is most apparent in the language. It is a pleasure to the ears to hear both Spanish and Catalan in Barcelona.

Highlights
Sagrada Famila, Barcelona Cathedral, Olympic Village, Torre Agbar, Gaudí's Park Güell, Gaudí's La Pedrera

When to go - climate
Barcelona's Mediterranean climate accounts for its mild winters and warm summers. July and August are the hottest, but the surrounding months provide a very comfortable environment.

Cusine & Café culture
Apart from finding the well-known Spanish dishes such as paella, Barcelona also offers traditional Catalan cuisine. Dishes are largely made up of Mediterranean vegetables including tomato, garlic, aubergine, red pepper, and artichoke, as well as meats and fish, particularly cod. Like Italian cuisine, a lot of pasta and olive oil are used too.

The Italian approach is also apparent in Barcelona's café culture. Café con leche (coffee with milk)  is popular for breakfast, followed by an espresso or a cortado (espresso cut with milk) after lunch. In the evening or after dinner it is not uncommon to indulge in a strong espresso or coffee with Spanish brandy.

Nightlife
The city never sleeps! A night out will usually start at a bar, where tapas are served to accompany the drinks. The clubbing scene in Barcelona is constantly changing so its a good idea to find where the happening spots are closer to your travel dates.

Shopping
Placa Catalunya and Barri Gotic have a large concentration of all types of shops. Calle Avinyó in Barri Gotic is a good place to start.
The parallel streets of Passeig de Gràcia and Rambla de Catalunya are excellent streets for fashion shopping.
El Corte Inglés department store offers something for everyone, and is renowed for its excellent customer service.
