Fly to Frankfurt

Cultural and economic metropolis
The skyline of Frankfurt is distinctive and marks the centre of this European financial and cultural centre. The city, which is situated on the river Main, is particularly popular for business conferences, as it holds a wealth of restaurants and facilities that make it a convenient business destination.

Highlights
Frankfurt Cathedral, Archeological Gardens, Botanical Garden (Palmengarten), Goethe-House, Old Höchst, Museum of Modern Art, Old Opera House, Deutsches Filmmuseum, Main Tower

When to visit - climate
In this area of Germany, summers are mild and winters are very cold. July and August are the warmest months of the year, and December to February the coldest. However, visitors who brave the elements in December will be treated to the amazing atmosphere that German cities create over the Christmas season.

Shopping
Goethestraße is Frankfurt’s ‘Fifth Avenue’ because this is the location of classy shops displaying the latest collections of international top designers.
The adjoining streets contain more affordable goods. Schillerstraße and Steinweg are popular and every Friday, a weekly market with around 50 stalls is held in Schillerstraße.
Frankfurt’s most popular shopping mile is the ‘Zeil’, and almost anything can be found here. From well-known departments stores such as Galeria Kaufhof and Karstadt to specialised shops, the range of goods is extensive.
On Thursday and Saturday, the growers’ market on the Konstablerwache right on the Zeil is worth a visit. This is where growers offer their own products, from fresh vegetables and tasty cheese, to fine bottles of wine.

Cuisine
Frankfurt’s culinary mile is the so-called “Fressgass’” (“munching street”). Here, you can enjoy one of the many cafes, lunchrooms and snack bars. Nowhere in Germany will you find a greater diversity of restaurants within only a single street.  Recommended events are the annual Fressgass’ festival in June and the annual Rheingau Wine Market in August.
The cuisine in Frankfurt is comprised of more than just frankfurters and sauerkraut. Here you can find not only excellent German fare, but also a great variety of international cuisine.

Local food specialties include:
- Handkäse mit Musik: curdled quark cheese rolled by hand into a cylindrical shape. A thin layer of butter is spread over dark brown bread, and then a slice of the cheese, along with a sampling of the Musik; the vinegar, onions, and caraway seeds.
- Grüne Sosse (green sauce): It contains parsley, sorrel, dill, burnet, borage, chervil and chives, and is usually mixed with sour cream or quark and eaten with hard-boiled eggs or brisket of beef and boiled potatoes.
- Bethmännchen: biscuits with marzipan in the centre and almond slices on the outside

Apple wine (apfelwein)
Apple wine is Frankfurt´s local beverage of preference, and is also known as "Ebbelwei" or "Stöffche". In the animated area of Sachsenhausen or in Alt Bornheim there are atmospheric apple wine taverns, where you can enjoy apple wine with traditional snacks.

Did you know?
- The city’s full name is “Frankfurt am Main”, which translates to “Frankfurt on the Main”
- Frankfurt is called by its full name when necessary to distinguish it from the other (smaller) Frankfurt in the German state of Brandenburg, known as Frankfurt Oder
