1. Suzhou

Marco Polo called it "a very noble and grand city" and it is often described as "a heaven on earth". The Classical Gardens of Suzhou in particular are world-renowned and have been listed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO since 1997. The most famous of these are the Humble Administrator's Garden, the Lingering Garden, the Wangshi Garden and the Lions Grove, showcasing refined landscapes of flowers and trees, water features, hills, bridges, corridors and pavilions.
2. Wuxi

A 3000-year-old city in the heart of the Yangtze River Delta, Wuxi is a famed "land of rice and fish". It has picturesque scenery and its Jichang Garden is replicated at Beijing's Summer Palace. The ancient Grand Canal, which links Beijing to Hangzhou, runs right through Wuxi, generating economic and tourist activity on its banks. Another major attraction in Wuxi is Lingshan Hill, which houses an 88-metre-tall standing bronze statue of Buddha.

3. Zhenjiang

The works of Nobel Laureate and Pulitzer prize-winning writer Pearl S Buck were stamped with the influence of Zhenjiang's local culture, where she spent her childhood. A visit to Zhenjiang is not complete without visiting the enchanting Jinshan Hill, towering 44 metres high above sea level. Amongst its many attractions include the 1600-year-old Jinshan temple and Cishou Pagoda.

4. Yangzhou

The Five Pavilion Bridge over the Slender West Lake is a landmark of Yangzhou. The lake park consists of a few picturesque tourist spots, including a perfect replica of Beijing’s White Pagoda and the Marco Polo Memorial Hall, built in honour of his visit in the 13th century. Yangzhou is also home to Geyuan Garden and Heyuan Garden, both mansions from the Qing Dynasty era which showcases lovely rock and water landscapes, decorated corridors, courtyards and pavilions.
5. Xuzhou

With a history spanning 4000 years, Xuzhou served as the capital city of the Han and Jin Dynasties, and as such, many relics of the Han Dynasty can be found here, including the Han tombs, hundreds of Han terracotta warriors and horses, and the Han frescoes, altogether known as the ‘Three Perfections of the Han Dynasty’.
