Travel Guide to Melbourne
When in Melbourne, don’t forget to…
Visit an art gallery. Art is a major part of the Melbourne identity. The collection of the National Gallery of Victoria is spread across two sites – the International and Australian galleries. Both are worth visiting. They are about a ten-minute walk apart across the Yarra River, and often feature blockbuster exhibitions.
Check out the live music scene. The Toff in Town offers a wide variety of musical performances, from pop to country. It also showcases dance, comedy, and theatre, as well as cheeky cabaret-style performing arts.
Spend a morning wandering through the quirky boutiques and independent galleries of the CBD for fabulous shopping finds. In the afternoon, make your way to glitzy Chapel Street to people-watch. For something a little more offbeat, try Gertrude Street’s boutiques and speciality stores.
Head up to the southern hemisphere’s highest observation platform, Eureka Skydeck 88, for the Skydeck Experience – a 360-degree floor-to-ceiling view of Melbourne’s CBD, Port Phillip Bay, Docklands and everything in between. For extra thrills, try “The Edge” in which you’ll stand in a glass cube that juts out three metres from the building, suspended almost 300m above the ground.
Take a tour with a difference by riding pillion on a genuine Harley Davidson motorcycle. Over the past 20 years, thousands of people have taken the Melbourne Harley Davidson Rides and Tours. It’s one of the best ways to see the city in an hour. Sign up for a wine tour at Yarra Valley nearby if you have more time.
