For nature lovers, Kakadu is a ‘must visit’ as not only does it have incredible birdlife, it’s also home to water buffalo, wild horses and saltwater crocs which you can get up close to on a Yellow Water Billabong Cruise. To experience the stunning escarpments, winding gorges and natural hot springs of the Katherine region, visit Nitmiluk National Park, three hours’ drive south of Darwin and the perfect place to hike, kayak and cruise. To see an Australian wildlife icon up close, visit Alice Spring’s Kangaroo Sanctuary where you can cuddle and feed orphaned baby joeys and witness how the grown-up kangaroos love their 188-acre home. The Northern Territory is famous for its Indigenous art and culture. In fact, Alice Springs has the most art galleries, per capita, of anywhere in Australia making it one of the best places to learn about, and purchase, indigenous art. And, in the Top End, a different kind of art lies on the rock walls, caves and escarpments of the national parks, depicting an ancient culture of up to 30,000 years old.

Day trips to the Tiwi Islands (from Darwin) are an excellent way to immerse yourself in indigenous island culture; you’ll learn about how this friendly indigenous community lives, they’ll show you their locally made artwork and textiles, teach you about the Tiwi Creation Story and let you take part in a cultural art workshop where you’ll get to take home your own art memento.

Darwin is actually so famous for its Laksa, that they even created a festival for it! Darwin is the closest Australian capital city to Asia and as such has a diverse and eclectic array of cuisine with plenty of delicious Asian inspired restaurants. Visit the many bars and restaurants in the CBD or on the Waterfront for tasty food made with local produce. Head over to Mindil Beach Sunset Markets to try one of the many food stalls whilst watching the sunset from the beach.

Elsewhere in the Northern Territory, beyond Darwin, enjoy a sunset dinner cruise on Nitmiluk Gorge or sundowners and canapes on a billabong in Kakadu. Dine al fresco ‘Under a Desert Moon’ at Kings Canyon or at one of the incredible outdoor dining experiences at Uluru.
