Transiting in Singapore

While we are excited to welcome you back on board, we are also mindful of the health and safety concerns that you may have. There have been several regulatory changes introduced at Singapore Changi Airport relating to transit. Transit passengers may experience certain restrictions, such as limited movement within the transit area, due to regulations in place. Do note that transit time in Singapore should not exceed 48 hours.

Before you book
Check eligibility to transit

Only passengers travelling with an airline whose transfer routes have been approved by the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) will be allowed to transit in Singapore. Transfers between Singapore Airlines, Scoot, Air France, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, Air Niugini, Garuda Indonesia, Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines and Turkish Airlines have been approved by CAAS for transit in Singapore. Transfers to and from flights operated by other airlines, that have not been approved by CAAS are currently not allowed. Please ensure your transit in Singapore is booked on a single itinerary. Do check the travel advisories as well to ensure that you meet the requirements of all points in your itinerary.

Flying from your departure city
Take a pre-departure Covid-19 PCR test

Travellers, including Singapore citizens and permanent residents, transiting through Singapore will be required to take a pre-departure Covid-19 PCR test within 48 hours of the scheduled departure date of their flight.

The test must be taken at a recognised or accredited clinic, laboratory or medical facility. Please note that self-administered PCR tests will not be accepted for entry or transit through Singapore. For a smoother check-in process, you should check if the clinic is able to provide a test certificate with a corresponding QR code. This QR code should link to your digital pre-departure test certificate.

This requirement does not apply to travellers aged 2 years and below (i.e. born in or after 2019), as well as those who have stayed in lower-risk countries/regions in the last 14 days before departure for Singapore. This currently applies to travellers from Hong Kong SAR, China; Macao SAR, China; Mainland China and Taiwan, China. Please note that while these passengers are exempted from the pre-departure test requirement to transit through Singapore, they may still be required to produce a valid negative Covid-19 PCR test certificate if it is required for entry into their planned destination.

Prepare your vaccination certificate

Transit passengers travelling on Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) flights after 19 October 2021 will need a digitally verifiable vaccination certificate. Learn more here.

You will be screened for signs of illnesses, and asked to declare your health status at your departure airport. If you are exhibiting any symptoms of respiratory illnesses, you will not be allowed on board.

Proceed to the boarding gate early

Head to the boarding gate early, wait for your boarding group to be called, and practise safe distancing at all times.

Wear a face mask

You are required to wear a face mask throughout your flight except at meal times. Children under the age of six are exempted from wearing a mask on board. You should know that most airports will also require you to wear a face mask, so do ensure you have one before leaving home.

On board
Collect your SIA Care Kit

Before boarding the aircraft, collect your complimentary kit containing a face mask, hand sanitiser, and disinfectant surface wipe. Do note that a face mask must be worn throughout the duration of your flight except when eating or drinking.

At Singapore Changi Airport
Transit Passengers from Category I and Vaccinated Travel Lane Customers

Before proceeding, click here to learn what category of country you are flying in from. A list of Vaccinated Travel Lane countries can also be found here. If your itinerary contains any Category III or IV country prior to arriving in Singapore, please read from the ‘Arriving at Singapore Changi Airport – Category III & IV Countries’ onwards.

If you are from flying into Singapore from a Category 1 country or on a VTL flight there will be little impact to your transit experience. However, some eateries and attractions may be closed during this time. You will generally be free to roam within transit. For passengers transiting onto Category III or IV countries, you are advised to proceed to your boarding gates no earlier than 60 minutes prior to your flight departure. The rest of this section does not apply to you.

Transit Passengers from Category II countries who are not on a designated Vaccinated Travel Lane

Upon disembarkation from your flight, you should proceed to the Central Transit area of Changi Airport. You may be escorted to this area by the airport’s staff. You will be requested to stay in this area, and will only be able to enter the gatehold areas one hour prior to your flight departure. Passengers who are eligible to access the SilverKris Lounge will find our relocated Lounge in the Central Transit area. Please note that some eateries and attractions may be closed during this time. The rest of this section does not apply to you.

Be ushered to your next boarding gate or transit holding area

All transit passengers will be welcomed by an usher.

If your transit time is less than 75 minutes, you will directly proceed in groups to your next boarding gate. If your transit time is more than 75 minutes, you will be ushered in groups to a designated transit holding area. Due to regulatory requirements, you will not be able to visit any shops, restrooms, or amenities en route to the next boarding gate or the designated transit holding area.

The transit holding area (THA) is separated into two zones due to safe management measures required by the authorities. Transit passengers who boarded from or transited through Malaysia, Netherlands, Philippines, Russian Federation, South Africa, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom and Vietnam will be brought to THA Zone A within the Transit Holding Area and other countries will be in THA Zone B.

If you are a PPS Club member, Suites, First Class, or Business Class passenger you can access the premium waiting area where complimentary WiFi, food and drinks are available.

Transit passengers may wish to note that Aerotel Singapore Transit Hotel, the transit hotel at Changi Airport Terminal 1, and Ambassador Transit Hotel at Changi Airport Terminal 3 are open for bookings . Passengers with a hotel booking will first be ushered to the airport’s transit holding area for verification checks. They will be guided to the transit hotel only after the checks have been completed. They must remain in the hotel throughout their stay. Upon checking out from the hotel, they will be ushered to the transit holding area before their connecting flight.

Your connecting flight
Listen out for your boarding call

Around 75 minutes before your flight departs, you will be ushered in groups from the transit holding area to your boarding gate for security screening and boarding. Just like the flight from your departure city, you will be the first group to board the aircraft, regardless of cabin class.

Transit passengers originating from countries/regions which Singapore has unilaterally lifted border restrictions will board the aircraft along with passengers departing directly from Singapore.

Arriving at your destination

Passengers who started their journey in Singapore will disembark the aircraft first. Do remember to practise safe distancing in the immigration queues and at the baggage claim area.
