Plan your trip

Sri Lanka is easy to combine with regional travel, with Colombo as a gateway to South Asia and the Indian Ocean. Allow time to move between the coast, hill country, and heritage sites so you can enjoy the country at an unhurried pace.

Best time to visit Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has a tropical climate shaped by two monsoon patterns, so different regions have different ideal months. On the west and south coasts, as well as in Colombo and the hill country, the main dry period is roughly December to March (peak season), with daytime temperatures around 27–30°C (81–86°F) on the coast and 18–22°C (64–72°F) in the hills. April, and then July to September, are often considered shoulder season, with warm temperatures of about 28–31°C (82–88°F) in many areas and passing showers that are usually short-lived. The wetter months differ by region, but broadly May to June for the south-west and October to November for much of the island can be rainier (low season), with similar temperatures of 26–29°C (79–84°F) but heavier, more frequent downpours.
