Discover Sri Lanka

Why visit Sri Lanka?

Sri Lanka offers golden beaches, tea-covered hills, ancient cities, and wildlife-rich national parks in a compact island setting. You can explore culture, nature, and coastline without long overland journeys.

What to expect

From the colonial charm of Colombo to the hill country around Kandy and Ella, and the southern beaches near Galle, each region has a distinct feel. Expect friendly hospitality, layered history, and a relaxed pace of life.

Plan your trip

Sri Lanka works well for both short beach breaks and longer tours combining culture, tea country, and safaris. It is also a convenient base for exploring the wider Indian Ocean region, with good domestic and regional links.

Getting around

For longer distances, combine private car transfers with rail journeys, especially in the hill country. Buses and tuk-tuks help you cover shorter routes and get around within towns and cities.

Local life & culture

Daily life centres on bustling markets, village festivals, and strong family ties, with influences from South Asia, Europe, and the Indian Ocean trade. You will notice different languages, traditions, and customs as you move between regions.

Where to unwind

Head to the beaches of the south and east coasts for sea air and gentle waves, or retreat to the cooler hill country for misty mornings and quiet walks among tea fields. Many resorts and hotels offer spas, yoga, and wellness experiences in tranquil surroundings.

A taste of Sri Lanka

National dishes & specialties

Signature dishes include rice and curry with a variety of vegetable and seafood sides, hoppers (bowl-shaped pancakes), and kottu, a chopped flatbread stir-fry. Coastal regions are known for fresh seafood, while the hill country often features hearty vegetable curries.

Casual & modern dining hubs

In Colombo, Kandy, and Galle you will find relaxed cafes, food courts, and family-run eateries serving Sri Lankan favourites alongside international options. Street-side spots and small restaurants offer quick, flavourful meals throughout the day.

Signature & scenic dining

Enjoy tea-themed afternoon spreads in hill-country bungalows, rooftop restaurants in Colombo with city and ocean views, or oceanfront dining on the south and west coasts with the sound of waves in the background.

In Colombo and Galle, some boutiques and malls stay open into the evening, while occasional night markets and seafront stalls add atmosphere with food, souvenirs, and casual browsing under the lights.

Best time to visit Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's climate is shaped by two monsoon systems, so different regions have different ideal months. The west and south coasts, plus much of the hill country, are generally driest from December to March (peak season), with temperatures around 27°C to 30°C (81°F to 86°F) on the coast and cooler 18°C to 22°C (64°F to 72°F) in the hills. April, and October to November, often bring changeable weather and some rain in many regions (shoulder season), with coastal temperatures near 28°C (82°F). The east coast is usually at its best from May to September, while the south and west coasts see more frequent showers then (low season there), with warm conditions around 28°C to 31°C (82°F to 88°F).
