Sri Lanka's west and south coasts, along with much of the interior including Colombo and Kandy, experience a tropical climate with two main monsoon patterns. The driest months for the west and south are typically December to March, while the east coast is often driest from May to September.
From December to March (peak season), much of the west and south coast, and popular inland areas, are generally warm and drier, with coastal daytime temperatures around 28–31°C (82–88°F). This period aligns with winter holidays in many countries, so key resorts and cities are busier.
April, and again from July to September, often form a shoulder season in many regions, with warm temperatures of about 27–30°C (81–86°F) and a mix of sunshine and showers (shoulder season). Conditions vary between coasts due to shifting monsoon winds, so it can be drier in one region while another sees more rain.
From May to June and October to November, some areas experience heavier rainfall, depending on the monsoon (low season). Temperatures remain warm, often 26–29°C (79–84°F), but higher humidity and more frequent showers can make it feel hotter. These months can be quieter, with a calmer atmosphere in many destinations.
